John
Prine died yesterday. I saw him at the Main Point in Bryn Mawr back
in the seventies while I was attending Villanova. The Main
Point was in walking distance of Villanova. It was located between
Kelly's Pub and Erin's Pub.
I
preferred Erin's. It
was darker and they didn't mind if you danced on the tables as long
as you could dance. As
I recall the guys from Villanova's NROTC danced on the Erin tables.
I
used to drink Guinness Stout there all night with only three dollars
in my pocket.
My
friend Vinnie Mattioli from Hammonton, New Jersey would play his
fiddle there some nights once he had a few beers. Big
Irish guys with beards in long leather coats looking like they just
got off the beach in Ryan's
Daughter would
come in looking
for donations for the IRA or maybe they were just big Irish guys
looking for beer money.
Here's
a list of the artists I was blessed to see perform at the
Main Point. My favorite has to be Leonard Cohen. I saw him in the
fall of 1974 after his release of the album New
Skin for the Old Ceremony.
